This is Emergency Unit Ltd, website of Dr Rowley Cottingham BSc FRCS(Ed) FRCEM MEWI FBASICS is a senior provider of specialised medical services such as expert medicolegal reports in the South East of England, race and rally medical examinations, D4 examinations and prehospital care.

He is an extremely experienced Consultant in Emergency Medicine who has practised medicine for over 40 years and has 28 years of Consultant experience. He remains employed part time, undergoing regular appraisal and revalidation of his practice and has provided PI and medical negligence reports since 1994. He handles any aspect of adult or paediatric trauma, including brain injury, environmental factors such as heatstroke, post road crash injury assessment (and liaison with collision engineers), adult medical conditions including stroke, sepsis and cauda equina. He is regularly recommended by Counsel.

He offers a particular expertise in matching collision damage to injuries, using whatever data is available. In collaboration with collision investigators, he identifies what injury patterns may have been sustained in other circumstances. He is also an acknowledged expert on heat-related illness (HRI), heatstroke, and hypothermia.

Dr Rowley Cottingham

Dr Rowley Cottingham has been a Consultant in Emergency Medicine since 1995 and has been producing medical reports to Court for solicitors from before that. He has a wide experience in road crash, industrial and personal injuries, and has dealt with negligence claims and complaints about service in Emergency Departments and Ambulance services.

He provides services in prehospital care and is the immediate past Chairman and lead Trustee of BASICS SE www.basicsse.org.uk and Finance Director and a Trustee of the British Association for Immediate Care  www.basics.org.uk, the national body for prehospital care. He is also Medical Director of Platinum Ambulance Ltd, one of the largest private provider of frontline 999 services as well as event and repatriation services.

He qualified as a doctor in 1979, and has worked in a wide variety of environments including traditional hospital work, anaesthesia including cardiothoracic surgery, research, general practice, expedition medicine, aviation medicine and race and rally emergency medicine to WRC and F1 levels.

His extensive research portfolio includes being on the writing committe for the influential CRASH trial asking whether steroids are indicated in head injury (after 10,008 patients we found they were not), and CRASH II and CRASH III investigations into tranexamic acid efficacy in trauma.

He co-authored the first paper in the world literature on the use of ketamine out of hospital. Ketamine is now widely used by ambulance services, helicopter emergency medical services and the military for pain relief and anaesthesia.

He was Medical Director of Bodychillz Ltd from 2013-2018. Bodychillz researched, developed and marketed Caervest, the world’s only active human cooling device.

He has received the following awards:

The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal 2001.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal 2012.

Fellowship of BASICS 2023. This is only the third award of this Fellowship ever made; awarded for outstanding contributions to development of the British Association for Immediate Care.

He now works independently. He is a member of the Register of Expert Witnesses and was elected to the Expert Witness Institute in 2020.
